Pallet flow rack system in a distribution center

Pallet Flow Rack in Florence, KY

Pallet flow rack in Florence, KY is built for stock that has to leave in the order it arrived. A pallet flow rack system loads from one aisle and picks from another, and gravity rollers carry each pallet to the pick face.

Grocery, foodservice and cold storage operators use flow racking to hold FIFO rotation without relying on drivers to get it right.

Flow Through Racking for Grocery and Cold Storage

A major grocery distribution center operates on Mt. Zion Rd in Florence, and food-grade 3PLs fill the big boxes on Logistics Blvd in Walton. Both deal with dated product, where first-in, first-out is the whole point.

Cooler and freezer rooms are expensive square footage. Pallet flow fills that cube with lanes instead of aisles, and keeps the pick face full while restock happens behind it.

How Pallet Flow Lanes Are Built

    Rollers and brakes

Full-width or skate-wheel rollers on a slight pitch, with speed controllers so pallets arrive under control.

    Entry and exit

Entry guides square the pallet on load; a separator at the exit holds the next pallet off the one being picked.

    Lane depth

Set by SKU volume. Deeper lanes hold more per SKU but need consistent pallets.

    Structure

Heavy rack frames and beams carry the rails, sized from your heaviest pallet.

Flow Racking System Layout in Tall Buildings

Newer space at Lakeland Logistics Center in Burlington runs 36 ft clear, and the Walton / Richwood buildings reach 40 ft. Tall flow racking needs the load aisle and pick aisle placed with the speed bays and 56 x 50 ft columns in mind.

For lower-volume dated SKUs, a mix works better: flow lanes for fast movers and selective pallet racks for the rest. Grocery pick lines often pair pallet flow with carton flow rack for case picks.

    Install Timing

Flow rails and brakes take longer to produce than standard teardrop parts, and lead time is confirmed on the quote. In live grocery and cold storage buildings we phase installs by section and plan around October-to-December peak. Winter snow and ice can slow deliveries, so we build slack into the dock schedule.
